SYSTEM INTEGRATION
CapraLink Connector
Each pauldron connects via a dedicated CapraLink port on the CapraSkin™ shoulder yoke. Quarter-turn twist-lock with silicone O-ring seal. Carries 12V/2A power, CAN-FD data (up to 5 Mbit/s), and a shielded IMU signal line. Gold-plated contacts rated to 10,000+ mate cycles.
Direct Interfaces
CapraCrest connects directly to CapraSkin™ (vest) via slide-rail quick-release. IMU data merges with CapraHelm™ and CapraNex™ orientation data in the CapraCore fusion pipeline. Exoskeleton actuator mounts accept CapraStride™ upper-body linkage arms for full-body load distribution.
Graceful Degradation
If CapraLink is severed or the pauldron is removed, all ballistic and structural protection continues to function. Only smart features (IMU telemetry, posture alerts, exoskeleton torque assist) go offline. The CapraCore system recalculates its body model without shoulder data within 200 ms of disconnect detection.
CAN-FD Bus Protocol
IMU packets broadcast at 200 Hz on CAN-FD arbitration ID 0x3C0–0x3CF (left/right shoulder pair). Each frame carries 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope, and a temperature reading. Bus load contribution: <2% of total CapraCore bandwidth. Priority level: medium (below ballistic impact alerts, above telemetry logging).
ACCESSORIES & ADD-ONS
Rail-Mounted Camera
1080p wide-angle IP camera mounts to MIL-STD 1913 shoulder rail. Provides blind-spot coverage behind the operator’s dominant side. Video streams to CapraCore for recording and HUD picture-in-picture overlay. IR illuminator for low-light environments.
IR Beacon Module
Infrared identification beacon mounts to either pauldron rail. Programmable flash pattern for IFF (Identification Friend or Foe). Visible only through NVG/thermal optics. Battery-independent: draws power from CapraLink. NATO STANAG 4694 compatible.
Ballistic Plate Upgrade Kit
Field-swappable ceramic strike face inserts that convert NIJ IIIA soft armor pockets to Level IV rifle protection. Alumina/SiC mosaic tile architecture for multi-hit capability. Each plate adds ~1.2 kg. Includes retention straps and foam spacer for proper standoff geometry.
Comfort Liner Replacement Pack
4-pack of antimicrobial TENCEL moisture-wicking liners sized for all three tiers. Hook-and-loop attachment for tool-free swap. Machine washable at 40°C. Each liner rated for ~200 hours of wear before antimicrobial treatment degrades. Replacement schedule: every 6 months for daily use.

RISK ANALYSIS
Shoulder Mobility vs. Coverage
Rigid pauldron shells restrict overhead arm movement and weapon shouldering. Mitigation: articulated hinge joints at deltoid-clavicle boundary; overlapping scale geometry that fans open during abduction; quick-detach for immediate removal.
Weight Distribution
Heavy ceramic plates shift center of gravity forward, increasing neck fatigue. Mitigation: rear counterweight integration with CapraPack™; load transfer yoke distributes mass to hip belt; prosumer tier uses lighter soft armor only.
Actuator Mount Durability
Exoskeleton actuator hardpoints experience cyclic stress during powered arm assist. Mitigation: titanium insert at mounting interface; 50,000-cycle fatigue qualification; redundant bolt pattern with thread-lock compound.
Slide-Rail Compatibility
Quick-release slide-rail must mate with CapraSkin™ vest across all body sizes. Mitigation: universal rail geometry tested on 5th-95th percentile torso manikins; spring-loaded detent lock with audible click confirmation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The base configuration provides NIJ IIIA soft armor protection against handgun and fragmentation threats. The Military tier accepts optional ceramic rifle plate inserts for elevated rifle-class threats. All tiers use GFRP or carbon-fiber composite pauldron shells for impact and abrasion resistance.
Each pauldron attaches to the CapraSkin™ vest via a slide-rail quick-release mechanism. Single-motion lock-in, emergency pull-tab release. The connection is structural (carries load) and electronic (routes sensor data via CapraLink™ connector). No tools required for attachment or removal.
Each shoulder houses a 3-axis inertial measurement unit that tracks torso tilt, rotational acceleration, and gait patterns. This data feeds CapraCore™ for posture analysis, fall prediction, and load distribution monitoring. The Military tier adds load cells for real-time carried-weight measurement.
The Military tier is designed with hardened actuator mounting flanges rated to 500 N continuous force. The mounting system transfers actuator forces through the composite frame directly to the hip-mounted load distribution system, compatible with the CapraStride™ lower-body exoskeleton. Tool-free attachment and removal.
The MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny-profile rails accept any standard-compatible accessory: weapon lights, IR strobes, cameras, antennas, identification markers, and comms equipment. The same rail ecosystem used across NATO equipment ensures broad accessory compatibility.
The Consumer tier is the lightest at under 1 kg per shoulder. The Prosumer tier with NIJ IIIA soft armor and full sensor suite targets sub-2 kg per shoulder. The Military tier with ceramic rifle plate inserts and exoskeleton mounting hardware is the heaviest, but the load distribution frame transfers weight to the hips.
Yes. The CapraCrest™ provides standalone ballistic and impact protection without any electronic systems active. The smart features (IMU tracking, load monitoring, HUD integration) activate when connected to CapraCore™ via CapraLink™, but the armor protects regardless of power state.
The TENCEL comfort liner is removable and machine-washable. Anti-microbial treatment prevents odor buildup. The memory-foam impact padding is sealed and wipe-clean. Both components are designed for field replacement without tools.
