Sustainability Meets Durability
The defense industry is not typically associated with environmental sustainability, but the reality is shifting. NATO's 2025 Green Defence Framework requires member nations to incorporate sustainability metrics into procurement decisions. The U.S. Department of Defense's Operational Energy Strategy explicitly calls for reduced lifecycle environmental impact in equipment acquisition. These policy directives are creating demand for high-performance materials that also meet sustainability criteria, and INVISTA's CORDURA re/cor fabric platform is positioned squarely in that intersection.
CORDURA has been the benchmark for tactical nylon fabric since the Vietnam War era. The 1000-denier CORDURA nylon used in military packs, pouches, and load-bearing equipment is tested to withstand over 1,000 cycles on the Wyzenbeek abrasion tester, a level of durability that far exceeds commercial fabric standards. The re/cor variant maintains this same military-grade abrasion resistance while incorporating a minimum of 50% post-consumer recycled nylon content.
The Recycling Process
CORDURA re/cor begins with post-consumer nylon waste, primarily discarded fishing nets and carpet fibers collected through established recycling programs. These waste streams are depolymerized back to their monomer building blocks, caprolactam, through a chemical recycling process. The recovered caprolactam is then re-polymerized into virgin-quality nylon 6,6 polymer that is molecularly identical to petroleum-derived nylon.
This chemical recycling approach is distinct from mechanical recycling, which simply melts and re-extrudes waste plastic. Mechanical recycling degrades polymer chain length with each cycle, progressively reducing mechanical properties. Chemical recycling produces monomers of equivalent purity to those derived from petrochemical feedstocks, meaning the resulting fiber has identical performance characteristics. There is no "recycled content penalty" in mechanical performance.
Performance Equivalence
INVISTA has published extensive testing data demonstrating that CORDURA re/cor meets or exceeds all performance specifications of conventional CORDURA. Tear strength, measured by the Elmendorf method, shows no statistically significant difference between re/cor and conventional variants. Abrasion resistance, measured by both Wyzenbeek and Martindale methods, is within 5% of conventional fabric performance. UV resistance, colorfastness, and water resistance are all equivalent.
Supply Chain Benefits
Beyond the environmental benefits, CORDURA re/cor offers supply chain diversification advantages. Traditional nylon production is dependent on petrochemical feedstocks and the associated supply chain volatility. Recycled nylon feedstock, derived from waste streams that are abundant and geographically distributed, provides an alternative supply chain that is less susceptible to petroleum market disruptions.
For defense applications, supply chain resilience is a strategic consideration. The ability to produce critical fabric materials from recycled domestic waste streams reduces dependence on foreign petrochemical imports. Several NATO defense ministries have identified this supply chain independence as a motivating factor in their adoption of recycled content materials.
Tactical Applications
CORDURA re/cor is qualified for use in a wide range of tactical textile applications. Plate carrier outer shells, magazine pouches, pack bodies, and accessory panels can all be constructed from re/cor fabric without performance compromise. The fabric is available in all standard military color patterns, including Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP), MultiCam, and solid colors.
The fabric is also available with additional functional treatments including IR-reflective coatings for signature management, antimicrobial treatments for extended field use, and fire-retardant finishes for applications near pyrotechnics or in fire-risk environments. These treatments are applied using the same processes as conventional CORDURA and achieve equivalent performance.
GoatArma™ Implementation
GoatArma™ has selected CORDURA re/cor as the primary outer shell fabric for the CAPRASKIN™'s apparel layer. The outer shell is the layer that takes the most abuse from environmental exposure, abrasion against surfaces and equipment, and handling during donning and doffing. It must withstand this abuse while maintaining its appearance and structural integrity over a multi-year service life.
Our decision to use re/cor was driven by three factors. First, performance equivalence with conventional CORDURA means no compromise in durability. Second, the sustainability credentials support GoatArma™'s corporate commitment to environmental responsibility and position us favorably in procurement evaluations that include sustainability criteria. Third, the recycled content story resonates with our target market segments, particularly law enforcement agencies and corporate security operations that face public scrutiny regarding their environmental practices.
Every GoatArma™ CAPRASKIN™ outer shell diverts approximately 0.8 kg of post-consumer nylon waste from landfill or ocean disposal. Across projected production volumes, this represents a meaningful contribution to the circular economy while delivering protection that meets or exceeds the standard set by the most trusted name in tactical nylon.
